The Maienzug is Aarau's most important festive day and is held every year on the first Friday in July. The highlight is the procession of schoolchildren through the town.

It is not just the Aar which flows through Aarau, but also the Stadtbach, an artificially created water course, which in earlier times channelled the life-giving water from a spring right into the town. And every September its bed had to be cleared of refuse, a task which all the townspeople undertook together.

The ancient custom of egg gathering takes place in Effingen eight days after Easter on "even" years. The contest staged as a rivalry between winter and spring is accompanied by the antics of creatures masked as primaeval beings.

It's in November and December that the distinctive sharp cracks of the "Chlausgeisseln" whips can be heard throughout the Lenzburg region as darkness sets in. The custom of "Chlauschlöpfen" is designed to rouse Santa Claus from his slumber.

On the Sunday following Ash Wednesday a Catherine wheel and homemade falling stars light up the night sky in Oeschgen. The ancient custom of "Scheibenschlagen" is said to be of pagan origin.

The traditional custom of Eierleset is held in Wölflinswil on 1 May 2008 – Ascension Day. The contest is a combination of running and throwing, and is rounded off with a shared "meal of eggs".
