Museums

The Aargauer Kunsthaus is home to one of the finest and most extensive collections of Swiss contemporary art. A new extension designed by the architects Herzog & de Meuron was built in 2003.

The Forum Schlossplatz is an inter-disciplinary cultural centre. Topical cultural issues are addressed in temporary theme-based exhibitions, always in combination with a rich and varied programme of events.

Naturama, which opened in 2002, is one of the most modern nature museums in Switzerland. As they embark on a journey through time, visitors are able to see how nature in the region was formed, how it looks today, and its potential future development, all this in an entertaining way and an experience for all the senses.

The Schlössli Town Museum is the oldest building on the Aarau municipal territory and offers a lively account of the town's history.

Switzerland's largest open-air archaeological museum has over thirty historic sites waiting to be discovered. They include the newly renovated theatre, the Roman House, and much, much more.

The Höfli District Museum documents Bad Zurzach's exceptional history with its Roman forts, the tomb of Saint Verena, and the thermal baths.

The upper floors of the "Haus der Kunst" houses the estate of the Basel artist Pieter van de Cuylen (1909-1990); on the ground floor is the "Galerie zum Elephanten", with temporary exhibitions of artists from Switzerland and abroad.

The Baden History Museum recreates the past with a fascinating, realistic and comprehensive account of life in the town, for adults and children alike. The setting itself is unique, with its elegant bailiwick and the distinctive new extension.

Since 2004 the Kunstraum Baden has specialised in showing temporary exhibitions of contemporary art; it is also the official documentation agency for artists in the Baden region.

Villa Langmatt was built in 1900/01 by the Brown industrialist family, co-founders of the electrotechnical company BBC, now ABB. The Villa is set in what is now a century-old garden landscape and houses masterpieces of French Impressionism as well as Oriental and European ceramics.
