Art & Culture
The Aargau owes its reputation as the "Culture Canton" to the progressive educational endeavours of enlightened 19th century liberals. It's a honour that was confirmed in 1968 when the Canton awarded itself one of the most innovative legislations in Switzerland aimed at promoting culture. It is not surprising, then, that the Aargau's cultural landscape should be as diverse as it is. Besides the castles of Hallwyl, Lenzburg, Wildegg and Habsburg and the abbey churches of Muri, Königsfelden and Wettingen, other cultural institutions of national renown and reputation include the Aargauer Kunsthaus Aarau, the Stapferhaus Lenzburg and the Naturama in Aarau.
The Aargau's reputation as the Canton of Culture is also underscored by the many other smaller museums, the galleries, and the theatre, music and literature offers.
